Visit to Galashiels

Joined the Scotrail Club 50 last month to take advantage of their £10 anywhere in Scotland return Anniversary offer.     Decided to go to Galashiels from Dundee on Fri 21st Oct and stay over returning on Sat 22nd Oct.  Left Dundee at 11:30 on Fri morning and arrived at Gala Station around 14:10.

With all the fuss recently about Scotrail Abellio’s record for punctuality and service, I was pleasently surprised to find that both journeys were bang on time (Dundee -> Edinburgh and Edinburgh -> Galashiels) and were also clean and tidy.    Although busy, the trains were not crammed.

Stayed Overnight in the Watson Lodge Guest House in Galashiels, which is a short distance from the station and located right in the centre of town.

Very nice stay, friendly and comfortable, and would recommend it to anyone thinking of stopping off in Gala for a break.    Also Gala boasts many restaurants but Turnbull’s where we ate on Friday evening is an excellent choice.

Gala is a nice town with a good variety of shops, so we had plenty to do and see on both Fri afternoon and Sat morning.

Ended up buying a bit of furniture that was too big to bring back on the train, so a future trip by car will be needed to get it home.

Return journey just as good and punctual as the outbound, although there were some standing passangers  from around Gorebridge to Waverley on the Tweedbank service on Sat Morning.   We left Gala on the 10:40 Service as it started to rain and got back to dundee about 13:30.

Jacobite Trip from Fort William to Mallaig

Last weekend we took a trip to Fort William to travel on the Jacobite Steam Train to and from Mallaig.   Whilst it was good weather when we left Dundee, the skies were quite grey when we arrived in Fort William.

This led to some serious rain before we left on the train at 14:40 on the Saturday.   Weather was against us in getting any decent photos of Glenfinnan Viaduct in either direction unfortunately.

It had stopped raining by the time we got to Mallaig so we were able to wander around the town for the two hours that we had there.

On leaving Mallaig the rain re-appeared and remained with us all the way back to Fort William and also as far as Crieff on the way home.

Left Dundee at 07:30 on Sat morning and arrived home at 00:50 on Sun Morning.

Here are some of the few photos that we managed to take during the day.

Dundee Oor Willie Bucket Trail

My wife decided that she wanted to do this, so between Thu 14th and Sat 23rd Aug we toured Angus and Dundee getting each one bagged.

Photographs were either taken by myself or Sabhia Morris.

Here we go for all 55 locations.   Enjoy.

As well as the Bucket Trail, we caught up with the touring Willies during their visit to Perth so here are another 11 which were added to the tally.
